What happens when you move?

When you rise, your quadriceps help extend your knees and your gluteal muscles help extend your hips. Other muscles contribute too. During a controlled descent, your knee extensors produce force while lengthening. This is an eccentric contraction: your muscles help brake the movement.

What did the longevity research find?

A 2010 review pooled five observational studies involving 28,036 older adults. The slowest quarter on timed chair-rise tests had a mortality hazard ratio of 1.96 compared with the fastest quarter (95% confidence interval 1.56–2.45), after adjustment for age, sex, and body size. The chair-rise studies involved populations with average ages over 70.

This does not prove that chair exercises extend life. Test performance can reflect existing health and other factors. The study does not establish a protective 20-repetition target. Deliberately lowering slowly during exercise is different from taking longer to complete a timed test.

What can you practice?

Use a stable chair that will not slide. Start with a few comfortable, controlled repetitions and use stable support if needed. Work within your ability; stop if you feel pain or dizziness. A chair rise is one movement, not a complete fitness assessment.
